Schools are closed in Wilkes County today because of flooding from heavy rains. Numerous roads remain closed by flooding across southern Wilkes County.
A flash flood warning continues until 3 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.
Authorities were evacuating people in the Germantown Road area near Moravian Creek this morning.
Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible this morning. Runoff from heavy rains could continue to cause flooding of small creeks and streams.
Authorities are warning people not to drive where water covers the roadway. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. The water is often deeper than it appears, and just a foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep a vehicle off the road.
