For the past three decades, Robbie Knievel has been thrilling fans all over the world. Next month, he’ll be electrifying them right here in the Capitol City as part of a farewell tour.
Knievel, the son of legendary daredevil Evil Knievel, will perform a death defying stunt at next month's Republic of Texas Biker Rally.
“We're excited to say that this year for the first time Robby Knievel will be doing the jump in front of the Capitol,” said Jerry Bragg, president of the ROT Rally.
As part of his farewell tour that will begin in Austin, Knievel will jump over three 45-foot trucks in front of the State Capitol on 11th Street and Congress Avenue. Organizers said they expect more than 250,000 people to turn out for the event on Friday, June 12th at 11 p.m.
In one weekend, the ROT Rally brings in nearly $40 million dollars to the city of Austin. And this year, despite a recession, organizers are hoping for the same.
“We are dedicated to bringing more people, more money, and more economic benefit to the area,” said Bragg.
Councilmember Mike Martinez played a role in making this happen. The event is expected to be televised nationally, and Martinez believes it will put the ROT Rally on the map.
“It really is an opportunity for us to be on a national stage and prove to the rest of the country this is a place to come and enjoy,” he said.
And for die hard fans, the opportunity to see their hero is monumental.
“It's going to mean the world to me. I wouldn't miss it for the anything,” said Mitchell.
The ROT Rally runs June 11th-14th.
