chimborazo day

chimborazo day

Richmond school officials said they are trying to make the school day as normal as possible at Chimborazo Elementary School, where a man was shot and killed on a playground last night.
“This should be a safe haven,“ Sharon Scott, chief of safety and security for the school system, said this morning at Chimborazo Elementary. “Schools and churches should be a safe haven.“
One person has been charged in connection with the killing at the school in Richmond’s East End.
Authorities found a man’s body on the playground at 31st and East Marshall streets after responding to a 7:43 p.m. call that a person had been shot, Richmond police Capt. Linda Samuel said. The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified this morning as Thomas Henry Scott Jr., 20, of Richmond.
Samuel said police have charged Anthony Singleton, 20, of Richmond with conspiracy to commit murder.
Investigators were continuing their efforts to establish a motive for the shooting, Samuel said this morning.
At the time of the shooting, the school was functioning as a community center that stays open until 10 p.m. on weeknights, said Christy Everson, a spokeswoman for city Parks and Recreation. Officials locked the doors of the school after one or more gunshots were heard, Everson said.
Police said the shooting appeared to be unrelated to anything going on at the school.
